Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in employing replay technology.
Replay systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Players are granted the option to challenge particular rulings made by the chair umpire, mirroring the practice already in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
This innovation is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.
This step comes just a year after the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which effectively ended the centuries-old tradition of line officials.
Reviewable Decisions
Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to re-examine other decisions, including:
- Whether a ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a ball touched an opponent's racquet or body during play.
- Potential hindrance end of a point.
Importantly, there is no cap on the amount of reviews a player can initiate.
Practical Application
An illustrative case occurred in a recent tournament recently, where a top player initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.
Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his opponent had "played the rules quite well."
The umpire watched a video and determined Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the point to his opponent.
Broader Adoption
This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews in place at every one of its events.
Other Changes
A further innovation at The Championships this year will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.
This solves situations where the crowd have sometimes been unsure whether a ball was in or out.
Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
