European Cup Action Tonight: Marseille v Newcastle & Additional Games

Welcome to another night of exciting Champions League soccer. 9 matches are planned for this evening, featuring 3 British clubs in action. The Blues meet Barça in the standout match of the night, while The Magpies visit the French side and Manchester City host Leverkusen.

Group Rankings

We're at the halfway point of the league phase, meaning the rankings is taking form. All six British teams are presently in the top 12, but there are only 2 points between fifth and 16th place, thus there's a hint of snakes and ladders about the entire situation. It’s all up for grabs.

  • Ajax 0-1 Benfica (5.45pm)
  • Galatasaray 0-0 Union SG (5.45pm)

Past Meetings

The sole past encounter involving Marseille and Newcastle was the Europa League semi-final of 2003-04, claimed by an emerging star from Ivory Coast. Bayer Leverkusen and Manchester City have never met before. Chelsea and Barcelona have some past encounters.

Early Match Updates

Only a single goal during the opening period of the two early games. Samuel Dahl's 6th-minute strike has earned Jose Mourinho’s Benfica a one-nil advantage away to Ajax.

Newcastle’s Trip to Marseille

Although The Magpies arrived in the south of France coming off their restorative two-one home Premier League victory against Manchester City on the weekend, and having beaten Union SG, Benfica and Bilbao in the Champions League, their only away victory since the start of April came in Brussels at Union SG.

Not that Eddie Howe was overly keen to talk about the mental side of this away form issue. “The Champions League is different to Premier League games,” said the manager, whose side are 6th in the Champions League standings, with nine pts from a available 12 and automatic progression to the last 16 almost within touching distance. “I am not sure if you can compare them.”

A dedicated live feed is available for Barcelona vs Chelsea. Murray, the minute-by-minute equivalent of Maradona is on duty for that.
